Ministries
It is our call and mission to serve God and one another.
At Our Lady of the Southern Cross our goal is to have as many people as possible to serve and be involved in ministry. St Paul, in his Letter to the Corinthians, reminds us that we are the Body of Christ. As members of this Body, we are invited to be His hands, His feet and His eyes in our world. It is our call and mission to serve God and one another. Every time you give your time, energy, talents and financial resources to God, through your church family, you are serving Him and growing in your relationship with Him; serving is vital to discipleship. Any area of service it’s called ministry.

To be a Christian, then, is to be committed to action and to live out our faith through a generous service to one another. Involvement in ministry makes us more like Jesus who “came not to be served, but to serve“; He is our Teacher.

We, as disciples of Jesus, believe that each one of us have been gifted in a very special and unique way and are called to share our giftedness with others through strength-based ministry.

These are our ministry areas where you can share your strengths and talents with our parish community.

Please prayerfully consider your God given gifts and strengths and how you can use your time, talents and treasure to get involved in our God given community. We love our Parish community!

Hospitality Ministries
The vision of our Hospitality Ministry Teams is to highlight Jesus’ selfless love for all people. We strive to make Our Lady of the Southern Cross Parish a warm, welcoming and safe environment for all people, making them feel at home with us and assisting them with any needs they might have. Serving on these Teams provides opportunity and outlet to extend Christ’s love for His Church.
The After Mass
Parishioners gather in the foyer after all weekend Masses to enjoy refreshments and fellowship. To ensure a smooth and successful gathering, volunteers are needed in the kitchen area to setup, serve, maintain, and clean up afterward.

This ministry provides a great and simple way to get to know other parishioners and to grow in fellowship.

Greeter
The Greeters create a pleasant environment by welcoming people to Mass by opening the doors, saying hello with a smile and positive attitude. These hospitality ministers, along with the ushers, help create a culture of hospitality before, during, and after Mass.
Ushers
The ushers create a welcoming environment by directing and seating parishioners as they arrive for Mass.
Church Cleaning
Our community is truly blessed to have a wonderful place to meet, pray and celebrate the Eucharist. Being a part of our cleaning teams is a great way to get into service at the church and keep it safe and inviting for all.

Service in this area is a quiet blessing to the entire body of Christ who attend the church, and for the teams themselves.

Parking
This ministry is fun and you are the first impression a visitor receives. The parking volunteers set the tone for everything else that will follow for those attending our Masses. Those involved in this ministry make sure that parking is done in an orderly manner and that both drivers and pedestrians are safe.
Coffee Time
Another fun ministry!!! We love coffee and believe that lots of good things can happen while we share a good one. Volunteers in this ministry will receive special training to operate the coffee machine.
Church Building Maintenance
We have a beautiful Church that requires a lot of care and attention; items can break or be damaged and this ministry provides general maintenance and running of the Church to make it a safe and functional space for everyone to enjoy.
Columbarium and Marian Shrine
Our Columbarium is a sacred place where we honour and pray for our brothers and sisters who have gone to the Father. The Marian Shrine is a place of devotion and prayer where people can pray the rosary and spend some time in silence. This ministry aims at keeping these two places clean and presentable. This ministry includes some gardening and looking after three bronze statues.
Prayer Ministries
Jesus said: “…whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” (John 14:13)

Prayer is the calling of every Christian and of every member of Our Lady of the Southern Cross Parish. Through Baptism we are initiated into the one Body of Christ and commissioned to care for one another by prayer as well as action.

Our Church is open every day and we encourage you to enter into this sacred space and spend some quiet time in developing your relationship with Jesus.

Women’s Intercessory Prayer Group
This group of women gathers regularly to pray for intentions received by the Parish Office from our parishioners, friends and visitors.

Prayer Team Ministry
Prayer is the calling of every Christian and of every member of Our Lady of the Southern Cross.

Through Baptism we are initiated into the one Body of Christ and commissioned to care for one another by prayer as well as action.

This ministry of prayer is exercised after each weekend Mass and after the monthly Eucharistic Adoration (“the Experience”) for any parishioner or visitor who is in need of prayer for any personal reason.

Formation/
Discipleship Ministries
Through these ministries we want to help form and equip faithful disciples of Jesus Christ who under the guidance of the Holy Spirit strive to be people who love God, love each other, and change the world through all that we do.

Discipleship begins in baptism, our promise to live and grow as a follower of Jesus, and continues as we engage our faith critically and creatively. No matter where you are on your journey, we have opportunities for you to do that.

Children’s Liturgy
Children’s Liturgy of the Word refers to the practice of children (prep through 5th grade) to gather in Centacare to celebrate a separate Liturgy of the Word that is more appropriate to their level of understanding. The Children’s Liturgy of the Word follows this structure:  worship (song), prayer, reading of the gospel, reflection, small group discussion and prayers of the faithful.

Parents are invited to register their children and take them to classrooms before the beginning of Mass.

Children in grades 4 and 5 re-join the congregation for the presentation of the gifts. Younger children stay until the end of Mass when are they signed out by their parents.

Volunteers in this ministry require a blue card and a police check.

Tiny Tots

This ministry is offered during Sunday Mass to children aged 2 to 4. Parents are invited to register their children and take them to classrooms before the beginning of Mass. Tiny Tots occur 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month. Volunteers in this ministry require a blue card and a police check.

Discipleship Groups
Do you ever feel you are living your faith alone? Are you looking for ways to grow in your relationship with Jesus and with one another? Consider being a part of a discipleship group!  These groups will pray, study, and share life together.

We encourage all our members to continue to grow as Disciples of Jesus. Disciples groups are small groups of 6-10 people who gather for a certain number of weeks to focus on studying and learning God’s Word in Holy Scripture.

Baptism Team
This team helps families to go through the preparation and assistance required so that their child/children can be welcomed into our community.

Becoming Catholic (RCIA)

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a journey of faith formation for individuals who are interested in living the Christian life in the Catholic tradition. Those who want to learn more about the possibility of becoming Catholic are welcome to ring the office.

Men’s Ministry
This is a men’s spiritual support group which currently meets each Monday from 7.00pm to around 8.30pm. This is a weekly commitment and the opportunity exists to lead small groups in discussion and spiritual development.
ALPHA
Everyone has questions. We believe everyone should have the chance to explore our Christian faith, ask questions and share their point of view. Consider the opportunity to explore your faith by joining this 12 week series which we offer multiple times in the year and at different times of the week.  We run Alpha for high schoolers and for adults.  After completing Alpha one can serve in our Evangelisation ministry.
Liturgical Ministries
There are many opportunities for involvement in the celebration of the liturgy. The primary ministry of all who are gathered together is to be an active member of the assembly. This is the essential responsibility of the baptised – to participate in the responses, singing, listening, silence, posture, and gesture to which all are called. After this primary participation, some are called to take part in special ministries. These ministries are to be of service to the community that has gathered together. They are each a particular ministry or function within the celebration, and new members of each ministry are always welcome.
Sacristans
Sacristans work quietly behind the scenes to ensure our liturgies run smoothly. Training is provided to prepare the sacred vessels, linens, books and vestments needed for the liturgy, and also clean and store all items. Sacristans are responsible for keeping the sacristies, (working and vesting), clean.
Lectors
Those who commit to this ministry have the special privilege of proclaiming the Word of the Lord during Mass.  Lectors must feel comfortable in front of the congregation, be able to read clearly, slowly and use the microphone properly. Lectors should arrive to Mass 10-15 minutes earlier. Lectors meet for prayer just before Mass. Training is required.
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion
These dedicated parishioners assist the Celebrant in distributing the Body and Blood of our Lord during Mass. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion should arrive to Mass 10-15 minutes earlier. Training is required.
Music Ministry

Attendance at music practice is required. We have different styles of music. Children and Youth choir are also rostered regularly.
Altar Servers
These boys and girls, fourth grade and older, assist Father with the celebration of Mass. Participants must have received First Communion. They should arrive to Mass at least 15 minutes earlier. Altar servers meet for prayer just before Mass. Training is required.

A/V Operators
Our Church has an audio and visual system operated through a local area network (LAN), which will require some technical knowledge and familiarity with computer operations. Volunteers in this ministry will require training. You will need to be at Church at least 20 minutes before Mass to set up and test the system and ensure that all systems are shut down after Mass.
Altar Linen Care
Altar Linen Care is performed weekly. Duties include washing, ironing and folding the purificators, corporals, hand and baptism towels used during Mass. It also includes looking after altar and priest’s vestments.

If you like to volunteer and especially iron, this is an opportunity to do something special for your parish.

Outreach Ministries
The purpose of the Outreach ministry is to model Christ’s concern for people, both individually and collectively in communities. The reason we exist is to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ to everyone we meet through personal witnessing. Outreach ministries are called to deal with the needs and concerns of persons beyond the congregation.

Ultimately, through these ministries, we want to provide a church family to those in our community and the surrounding areas who don’t know Jesus.
